Louis Thevenet

Software Engineer

Engineering student finishing at ENSEEIHT, looking for a full-time role from September 2026.

Currently a software engineering intern at Thales, where I'm building a drone-swarm simulator on Unreal Engine 5. I'm also active in the open-source community, working on personal and community projects.

Roles across simulation, systems engineering and infrastructure.

  1. Feb 2026 — Aug 2026

Software Engineer Intern — Drone Swarm Simulator, Unreal Engine

    Thales · Élancourt, France

    • Built the simulator on Unreal Engine 5 in C++ within the Drone Swarm team
    • Simulated onboard cameras with GPU-side encoding and live stream output
    • Physics-engine-agnostic simulator, able to simulate all kinds of vehicles
    • Photorealistic 3D environment
    • Integrated multiple physics engines (Gazebo for SwarmMaster, JSBSim for Toutatis) with synchronized terrain and collisions
    • Distributed the stream-rendering load across several machines
    Unreal Engine 5C++CUDA
  2. Jun 2025 — Aug 2025

Software Engineer Intern — NixOS/Slapos Fusion

    Nexedi · Lille, France

    • Integrated the Nix package manager into the SlapOS deployment system, replacing Ansible to strengthen reproducibility
    • Adapted the SlapOS software stack for full NixOS compatibility
    • Wrote articles showing that Nix and Docker don't produce truly portable binaries, since glibc is frozen into the image/store and diverges from the host system's
    • Patched nixpkgs to support older glibc/kernel versions, as a path toward restoring true portability for Nix binaries

  3. Summer 2024

IT Support — Oral Exams for Engineering School Entrance Exams

Service concours écoles d'ingénieurs · Toulouse, France

    • Managed the IT equipment used by examiners and candidates during the oral exams
    • Provided technical and logistical support, guided candidates to their exam rooms, and managed equipment

Projects

Selected personal projects

Mostly open-source work related to software development, simulation and emergent systems, primarily in Rust.

Absent Light

Absent Light is a turn-based survival game set in a fantasy world. Fight to survive in a harsh, persistent, procedurally generated world where every run is unique and the world reacts to your actions. The game is in early development and not yet publicly available.

  • Open-world survival across a procedurally generated fantasy world
  • Deep crafting and inventory systems — build, repair and improvise from whatever you scavenge
  • Emergent, systemic play where creatures, environment and magic collide without being scripted
  • Simple interface designed to make it easy to add content and deepen the simulation

vault-tasks

A terminal task manager that reads and writes tasks straight from Markdown files. Built to integrate seamlessly with note-taking and "second brain" software.

  • Extends Markdown with a task syntax carrying metadata (subtasks, tags, relative dates, priority and completion)
  • All data lives inside the tasks themselves, for maximum portability
  • Terminal interface to navigate, search, filter and edit tasks

map-generation

Procedural terrain and city generation experiments.

  • Procedural biome generation driven by temperature, moisture, continentalness and erosion maps
  • Explore an endless world in a TUI, with chunks generated as you move
  • The foundation of my procedural-generation work for a more ambitious project: Absent Light

Solarust

A simulation of gravitational interactions between celestial bodies, built in Rust.

  • Solar-system simulation built with the Bevy game engine in Rust
  • A learning project to dig into Bevy's ECS architecture and real-time rendering

RayTracerCsharp

A ray-tracing render engine for displaying 3D objects and scenes.

  • Engine written from scratch in C#
  • Loads 3D models from ASCII STL files and renders them with configurable lights and materials
